Purpose of Information Literacy Instruction

Synchronous instruction sessions are meant to be an intentional way to incorporate information literacy into your course. Our team of librarians scaffold information literacy concepts across the curriculum and develop sessions that will:

  • Broadly introduce your students to the library, its people, and our available resources, done through engaging activities and active discussion (ideal for first-year students or first-year graduate students)

  • Help students develop the research competencies they need to be successful in their field of study. This could include (but is not limited to) generating topic ideas and research questions, identifying keywords and keyword strategies, evaluating information and determining its credibility, and gathering potential sources through openly available or Steely resources. (ideal for students in upper class undergraduate courses and graduate students)

How to Schedule a Session

Please use the form below to request a synchronous information literacy instruction session. Use the "Go To Date" button to select your ideal date and then select your preferred time. We ask that you request your library instruction at least two weeks in advance. We will be hosting UNV 101 week Monday, September 11 through Friday, September 15 and will be unable to teach additional instruction sessions that week.

This fall, we are asking all faculty to reserve your instruction time for the semester by Friday, September 15 in order to allow our team to prepare and allocate our time accordingly.

These sessions can be conducted in-person at Steely Library or via Zoom. For classes that do not start at the top of the hour, choose the closest time and we will work with you to finalize your course time.

Not seeing a time you want? Having trouble with the form? Please direct your questions to Hailley Fargo, Head of Education & Outreach Services at For other ways to partner with us, please refer to our library instruction webpage. We look forward to working with you and your students!
